Paul G. Cano Legislative Internship for Pharmacy Students

The Paul G. Canon Legislative Internship is a paid 8-week summer program (early June through early August) during which students participate in ASCP's advocacy work on Capitol Hill and throughout Washington D.C.  This internship offers pharmacy students experience and training in federal and state legislative and regulatory advocacy, a chance to see firsthand how politics shape pharmacists' practice across the nation.

FMCP/Allergan Inc. Specialized Summer Internship Program in Health Outcomes

The Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy, in partnership with Allergan, Inc., a global specialty pharmaceutical and medical device company, is pleased to offer two appointments to the Specialized Summer Internship Program in Health Outcomes for pharmacist students.  The internships will take place over a ten-week period from May to August 2013.  The goal of this program is to create awareness of career paths in health outcomes and pharmacoeconomics research, the foundation for evidence-based decision making in managed health care systems.  In addition, the interns will gain knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, managed health care systems and professional associaton management.

The Burchfield Group Summer Internship Program - Preparing Pharmacy Leaders

The Burchfield Group offers pharmacy students an exciting internship opportunity.  In cooperation with the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy (FMCP) and the University of Minnesota Center for Leading Healthcare Change (CLHC), College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota, Burchfield prepares students to understand how healthcare reform will impact the managed care pharmacy industry.

2013 Internship Overview

As part of a nine-week program, two pharmacist students work directly with Burchfield pharmacists in their St. Paul, MN office, and other industry leaders, as they explore healthcare reform and its implications for the future of pharmacy and pharmacy professionals.  Students choose a topic to explore and present their findings at the 2013 Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Educational Conference.

Each student will explore his/her leadership potential mentorng with consulting experts, national pharmacy leaders and faculty from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.  As a capstone experience, interns will participate in a leadership summit, "Healthcare Reform - Leadership through Managing Care," in July, 2013.

FMCP/Pfizer Inc Managed Care Pharmacy Internship Program

Through participation in a structured 10-week internship program, selected student pharmacists are afforded the opportunity to directly participate in the daily activities of managed care pharmacy practice sites to include health plans, pharmacy benefit management companies, and employer based sites.  The 7 student pharmacists chosen for this program are also exposed to the working environment of a professional membership society and the pharmaceutical industry.

Eligibility Criteria

- Completion of the online application and submission of 3 letters of reference by close of business Monday, January 28th, 2013.

- Enrollment in the second or third professional year of the PharmD curriculum at an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy durng the 2012-13 school year with anticipated graduation in 2014 or 2015.  Studets enrolled in a join PharmD/MBA curriculum are eligible, but graduate students are not eligible.

- Ability to complete the internship during a consecutive 10-week period between the months of May through August 2013.   Exact dates will be coordinated with the site and intern.

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Clinical Sciences PhD Program and Post PharmD Fellowships

Regulatory Pharmaceutical Fellowship Program

General Position Description:
The Regulatory Pharmaceutical Fellowship is a two-year, learning based program designed to train pharmacists for careers in government, the pharmaceutical industry, or academia.  Each fellow will spend a 9-month rotation at the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) (Silver Spring, MD); a 9-month rotation at Eli Lilly and Company (Indianapolis, IN) and a 6-month rotation with Purdue University College of Pharmacy (Indianapolis, IN). The 2013-2015 cycle offers two tracks: Drug Information and Drug Advertising and Promotion. 

Deliverables include a research project completed at each training site summarizing experiences gained, a teaching portfolio, a continuing education presentation, and an individualized regulatory project.  Chosen candidates will have various educational experiences in cross-functional departments, have opportunities to publish articles and give presentations.  Qualified candidates must be a graduate from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy, or otherwise eligible for licensure, prior to the start of the fellowship term.

The Fellowship begins in July 2013 and continues until June 2015, with a competitive annual stipend and benefits.

The Pharmacy Manager works under the direction of the Regional Pharmacy Manager to assist in pharmacy operations by supporting the mission, vision, and values of Safeway, Inc. In addition to comprehensive pharmaceutical care through filling prescriptions, providing clinical services, and counseling patients, the pharmacy manager, above all, acts as a role model for the pharmacy team in overseeing and directing pharmacy operations.

  • Assist in pharmacy operations to achieve business objectives by increasing sales and gross margins, managing equipment, limiting expenses, directing operations to minimize wait times, monitoring department performance metrics, upholding proper pharmacy and general safety procedures and standards, and partnering with management in developing and implementing store programs to help meet sales objectives and increase prescription volume
  • Maintain inventory levels to company goals, rotates stock, complies with recalls, and utilizes return process
  • Coordinate pharmacy schedule; direct and monitor pharmacy personnel and performance by providing ongoing proactive, constructive feedback, training, and evaluations; make recommendations for hiring, promotion, and termination.
  • All activities related to the preparation, dispensing, and sale of prescription and pharmacy-related products
  • Participate in the Safeway Pharmacy Care Program, including administering immunizations, travel medicine, medication therapy management, and other specialty programs; this includes successful completion of APhA immunization training or its equivalent
  • Focus on customer satisfaction and needs, ensuring that customers are provided World Class Customer Service through use of best practices and prompt communication with physicians, vendors, and colleagues
  • Ensure all work processes are performed efficiently and effectively at each work station by prioritizing workload and organizing workflow
  • Verifies accuracy of pharmacy team by following established procedures
  • Works in communication with various levels of management to resolve issues
  • Maintains proper pharmacy and general safety procedures and standards, including department cleanliness
  • Ensures timely implementation of company policies, procedures, and programs
  • Enforces compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, company policies and procedures, and state regulations regarding intern, technician, and assistant training and licensure

Requirements:

  • Graduate from an accredited pharmacy college recognized by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE)
  • Must have an active pharmacy license in state(s) of practice with all held licenses in good standing and be immunization certified
  • Qualified to participate in federal health care programs, including but not limited to Medicare and Medicaid
  • 1 year of supervisory experience in a pharmacy setting
  • Knowledge of laws governing drugs, pharmacy products, and third party plans
  • Self-motivated with the ability to complete work with a minimum of supervision under tight time frames
  • Maintains honesty, integrity, and high levels of efficiency and accuracy at all times
  • Demonstrated practice of and high-level skill in multi-tasking, championing change, initiative, customer service, interpersonal relations including building relationships and resolving conflict, decision making, problem solving, teamwork, and verbal and written communication
