Pharm. D. FAQs

What degree do I list on my FAFSA?

Regardless of whether you have completed your B.S. degree, Pharm. D. students should list “first graduate/professional” as the degree they are working on. From the time you start Pharm. D. classes, you will be charged professional student tuition. Listing “first graduate/professional” on your FAFSA increases your Cost of Attendance (COA) and might increase the amount of aid you are offered.

What school do I list on my FAFSA?

Oregon State University (federal school code: 003210). Even though the Pharm. D. degree is jointly conferred by OSU and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), you should list only OSU on your FAFSA.

How much is tuition?

Tuition and fees for Pharm.D. students are subject to change each academic year. Tuition and fees for the 2008-2009 academic year are as follows:

Acedemic Year Resident Non-Resident
P1 - New Pharm. D. Students $18,933.90 $28,573.90
P2 - Returning Pharm.D. Students $16,737.90 $26,745.90
P3 - Returning Pharm.D. Students $19,342.68 $29,350.68
P4 - Returning Pharm.D. Students
$18,637.44* $30,825.44*

*In addition to the tuition listed, P4 students will student health fees which vary slightly depending on the location(s) chosen.

Why do I pay higher tuition in my P4 year?

During the P1, P2 and P3 years, students attend and pay tuition for three quarters (fall, winter, and spring). The P4 year begins immediately after the P3 year ends in June, and lasts a full 12 months. Therefore, P4s attend and pay tuition for four quarters (summer, fall, winter and spring).

What scholarships and financial aid are available for students?

Scholarships are generally only available to Pharm.D. students after completion of the first year. A limited number of scholarships may be available for incoming professional students, but an application is not necessary or required. Information on financial aid (grants, loans and scholarships) available through Oregon State University can be found at http://oregonstate.edu/admin/finaid.

Additional information about financial aid opportunities for pharmacy students is available through the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

The College of Pharmacy awards approximately $150,000 in scholarships to Pharm.D. students annually. Information on COP scholarships is available online at the College of Pharmacy.

How do fourth year rotations work?

During the P4 year, students rotate through seven six-week clerkships and have one six-week period (block) off. Rotation sites are selected by students during the P3 year and can vary widely in geographic location and practice specialization. Students are not required to relocate for their clerkships, but have the option to do so if they wish.

I need to miss a class. What do I do?

Please contact the course instructor by phone or e-mail prior to missing the class. Arrangements for “making up” the missed material are made at the instructor’s discretion. If you anticipate an extended absence (of more than one day) please contact the Angela Austin Haney, director of student services/head adviser.

What health insurance is required?

Only P3 students are required to have health insurance (through OHSU) although it is strongly recommended all that Pharm.D. students have health insurance coverage. Please contact Angela Austin Haney, director of student services/head adviser, with questions.

Who is my adviser?

Pharm.D. students are assigned a faculty adviser during P1 orientation. If you have forgotten who your faculty adviser is, please contact one of the College of Pharmacy advisers.

What happens if I get a D or an F in a Pharm.D. class?

The Academic and Professional Standards (APS) Committee reviews grades for all Pharm. D. students after each term. Students receiving D or F grades in any Pharm. D. course will be contacted by the director of student services/head adviser regarding their progress in the program. It is possible that your progression in the program could be delayed.
