Graduate studies program FAQs

Is the GRE required?

Yes. Graduate applicants must have taken the GRE test and scored at the 50th percentile or higher.

Are international applicants required to take the TOEFL?

The TOEFL is required for international students. The minimum score for acceptance is 213 for the computer based test, 80 for the internet-based test, and 550 for the paper-based test.  However, any international student who wishes to be considered for funding MUST take the internet-based TOEFL test.

What is the deadline for applications?

The deadline for domestic and international applicants is Feb. 1.

How do you decide which applicants to accept?

Acceptance to the graduate program is on a competitive basis and preference is given to domestic (U.S.) applications. Only the best applicants are considered, and of those, we can only accept the number of students we have space for. We take into consideration the GPA, GRE score, TOEFL score (if required), letters of recommendation, research experience, and other relevant information. We receive hundreds of applications each year and can accept only five to eight. The faculty is looking for students who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D., and preference will be given to those individuals.

What is tuition for graduate school?

Tuition can be calculated using the OSU tuition calculator found at http://oregonstate.edu/fa/businessaffairs/tuition-estimator.  Enter Corvallis campus, newly admitted graduate student, non-resident, 16 credits. There is no need to enter the College. Your academic year tuition will be displayed. Students are also required to register for 3 credits in summer. Summer term tuition can be found at http://oregonstate.edu/fa/businessaffairs/studentfinance/tuition/tuition_corvallis_summer09#Graduate. Tuition and fees for 2009-2010 is approximately $18,515 for the academic and summer terms.

Do you accept master’s students?

Yes, but master’s students do not receive funding and if limited slots are available, Ph.D. applicants receive preference.

Is a B.Pharm. or a bachelor of science of pharmacy sufficient preparation for the graduate program?

Admission for international students is highly competitive in our program. It has been our experience that neither the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) nor the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degrees from many countries provide an appropriate training to ensure success in a research-based Ph.D. program. Therefore, we only consider international applicants with a Masters degree or a Bachelor of Science degree in a specific scientific discipline such as chemistry or biology.
