PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in advanced or specialized practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacy and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists). This program focuses on the development and advancement of ambulatory services and disease state management in a complex and underserved population, while acquiring scholarly and academic experiences to prepare for a career in ambulatory care and academia.

The Oregon State University (OSU) PGY2 ambulatory care residency is offered in collaboration with Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) Family Medicine at Richmond (FMR). Richmond is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and level 3 Patient Centered Primary Care Home. This is a 12 month program designed to develop expertise in ambulatory care disease state management in a complex and underserved population of Portland, OR. Rotations are longitudinal in nature. The resident will work under collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) agreements and provide direct patient care visits. Current CDTM agreements include tobacco cessation, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis C, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Residents will also collaborate with primary care providers, nurses, behavioral health and other clinical staff. Residents will have the opportunity to develop and implement a new clinical service for Richmond to further enhance patient care.

Teaching Activities

PGY2 residents have the opportunity to participate in case facilitation in the pharmacy practice course and selected lectures in the integrated drug therapy course with third-year pharmacy students. Opportunities for experiential precepting of fourth year students throughout their ambulatory care rotation are also available.

Scholarship

Residents are required to complete one major project within the clinic. Data gathered from the project will be presented with an ASHP Midyear Meeting poster and written in a publishable manuscript. Residents are also given the opportunity to partner with college faculty members to complete various academia-focused projects.

Residents are also required to work with the Drug Use Research and Management (DURM) team. The DURM team is a partnership between Oregon State University College of Pharmacy and the state Oregon Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee. The resident will be expected to prepare an editorial newsletter, as well as a medication utilization evaluation (MUE) on assigned topics.
