Course description:

Diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease affecting more than 34 million Americans as of 2018. Over 25% of adults aged 65 and older have diabetes. As the population ages, it is essential that pharmacists understand the physiological age-related changes that can influence diabetes treatment, as well as psychological, functional, and social factors. This continuing education session will explore the various elements involved in constructing a feasible diabetes management plan for an elderly patient.

Program Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize treatment goals for older adults as recommended by the 2020 American Diabetes Association Standards of Care in Diabetes and the 2019 Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline.
  • Review potentially inappropriate medications for treating diabetes in the older adult as indicated in the 2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers’ Criteria.
  • Examine the medical, psychological, functional, and social geriatric domains involved in determining feasible therapeutic options for diabetes management.
  • Create an appropriate therapeutic plan for an elderly patient with diabetes.

Course description:

This presentation will review the updates in the 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Pain, Agitation/Sedation, Delirium, Immobility, and Sleep Disruption in Adult Patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Additional assessment will be conducted on drug shortage causes and mitigation strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of ICU Recovery clinics in the treatment of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome will also be presented.

Vaccines are a crucial component of our public health system and one of the safest ways to protect the health of our population. Unfortunately, misinformation, distrust and fear prevent adequate uptake of needed immunization. Pharmacists are in position to answer patient questions, point them to credible sources of information and help empower people to make health decisions rooted in science.
