The Philmus lab is broadly interested natural products (aka secondary metabolites) that are produced by microorganisms and plants. We are a "green" research lab that utilizes molecular biology, microbiology, analytical chemistry and synthetic chemistry to aid our investigations. We focus on genome mining, synthetic biology, and enzymology of natural products. Our research focuses on cyanobacterial natural products and the interesting chemistry they utilize. We also investigate the biosynthesis of an interesting class of compounds called the 1,2,4 triazines, where we are looking at both the biosynthesis and biological role including they potential as signaling molecules.
