The team in the College of Pharmacy Office of Student Success & Engagement assists with issues relating to academic success, career preparation, registration, financial aid, College of Pharmacy policies and procedures, graduation, etc.

The Head Advisor and Career Development Coordinator is responsible for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to deliver professional development workshops and overseeing the direction of career and professional development programming at the College.  They also coordinate the advising efforts of the College, facilitate Orientation programs, and organize the Student Ambassador program.  They Co-Chair the Academic and Professional Standards Committee, serve on the Admissions Committee, the Scholarship Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the OHSU Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC).

The Academic and Student Success advisor on the Corvallis campus is responsible for supporting students with resources and information about academic skills, professionalism and overall well-being.  

Admissions & Recruitment Coordinator | Portland

The Admission and Recruitment Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the recruitment, communication, and marketing materials and activities to ensure the College meets its enrollment goals. The Coordinator meets with prospective students and their families and builds relationships to behalf of the college. They are responsible for maintaining the admissions database and coordinating the admissions process including application processing, file reviews, and interviews. In this role, the Coordinator consults on and assures that admission policies are holistic, equitable, and accessible in the spirit of the Land-Grant university mission.

The Pharm.D. admissions recruiter provides outreach to prospective students and organizations to increase awareness of pharmacy as a profession and career choice.

Administrative Team - 2.2

Administration and Support in the College of Pharmacy 

The College’s administrative and operations staff ensure the completion of all aspects of delivery of education including oversight of academic policies and procedures, technical and computational resources, communications, outreach, and resources for research and other activities. The College’s organizational chart can be found here.  

Dean, David Bearden, Pharm.D. | Portland  

The Dean is the College’s Chief Executive Officer responsible for planning, oversight and implementation of all college functions including budgeting, facilities, faculty, research, and external relations. The Dean presides as the representative of the College at official functions including the white coat and graduation ceremonies. He is also a step in the appeals process if you’ve made a request to the Academic and Professional Standards committee that has been denied. 

Executive Assistant to the Dean, Jin Ballew | Portland 

The Dean’s Assistant has a supporting role in all aspects of the College’s function. Students may interact with the Dean’s Assistant when accessing scholarship material, checking on the Dean’s availability, and developing internal or external communications.  

Operations Manager, Andrea Friesen | Corvallis 

The Operations Manager is responsible for oversight of staff who support all the missions of the College including teaching, outreach, communications, information technology, scholarships, and events. Students may interact with the Operations Manager when needing support for a student organization fundraiser, gaining access to help with technology, distributing communications, collecting documents.  

Office Manager for Portland, Shayna Fleming | Portland 

The Portland Office Manager supports the operations on the Portland campus including addressing faculty needs, committee meeting support, badging, hiring, building issues such as parking and room scheduling, teaching and instructional support, facilitating computer repair, help with purchasing and reimbursement and many other activities. Students may see the Portland office manager when taking or collecting exams, gathering for meetings, and scheduling events in the RLSB.  

Office Manager for Corvallis, Noelle Cummings | Corvallis 

The Corvallis Office Manager supports the operations on the Corvallis campus including hiring needs, building issues, teaching and instructional support, help with purchasing and reimbursement, support for the graduate programs and postdoctoral trainees, and many other activities. Students may see the Corvallis office manager when gathering for meetings, scheduling, and working with committees. 

Information Technology Specialist, Gary Miller | Portland and Corvallis 

Students may interact with the Information Technology Specialist when experiencing technology needs or difficulties related to accessing instructional materials, support for student organizations, or other educational needs.  

Academic Programs Specialist, Jereme Bigelow | Portland  

Students may interact with the Academic Programs Specialist in the RLSB front office addressing exam support and returns, scheduling, and other general student needs. The Academic Programs Specialist also supports the college’s assessment and continuing education offices.  

Experiential Programs Support, Nancy Baker, and Danielle Trickle | Corvallis  

Students may interact with the Experiential program office to support IPPE and APPE registration and scheduling, uploading of required documents for different practice sites, and follow-up on any related issues.  

Associate Dean for Research (ADR) Oleh Taratula, Ph.D. | Corvallis 

The Associate Dean for Research is responsible for oversight of all the College’s research activities. The ADR can direct you to resources and/or faculty if you are interested in pursuing research during your PharmD program.  

Associate Dean for Academic Programs (ADAP), Theresa M. Filtz, Ph.D. | Corvallis 

The Associate Dean for Academic Programs is responsible for oversight of the curriculum, courses, schedule, policies and procedures in the Pharm.D., Ph.D. and M.S. programs in the College of Pharmacy. The ADAP can help you navigate many academic issues and special situations in conjunction with the Office of Student Success and Engagement.  

Associate Dean for Student Success and Experiential Education (ADSS), Juancho Ramirez, Pharm.D. | Portland 

The Associate Dean for Student Success and Experiential Education is responsible for oversight of recruiting, admissions, co-curricular activities, student organizations, experiential and clinical learning, career and professional development, and improving diversity, equity and inclusion for professional students. Students may interact with the ADSS in the context of student leadership, clerkships, career advising and/or navigation of personal issues affecting wellness or success.  

Director of Experiential Education, Shannon Starwalt, Pharm.D. | Corvallis 

The Director of Experiential Education supports all aspects of Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs and APPEs) from the first through the fourth years of the PharmD curriculum including sight placement, tracking of requirements, and preceptor training and development. The Director is also involved in career advising and professional development of students. 

Department Chairs of Pharmacy Practice, Adriane Irwin, Pharm.D. | Corvallis, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chrissa Kioussi, Ph.D. | Corvallis 

The department chairs are responsible for oversight of all faculty activities including teaching, research and scholarship, service, and clinical appointments, and providing the resources for instruction in the professional curriculum. Students may interact with the department chairs when you are looking for faculty with specific interests or expertise, seeking recommendation letters for conferences, scholarships, or other awards, or have concerns about instruction in a particular course.

Oregon State Student Pharmacists (OSSP)

Oregon State Student Pharmacists (OSSP) is a combination of the student branches of several professional pharmacy organizations, including:  

  • American Pharmacists Association (APhA)  

  • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) 

  • Oregon State Pharmacy Association (OSPA)  

  • Oregon Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP) 

  • National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) 

  • American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) 

  • Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) 

  • College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) 

  • American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) 

OSSP also provides a wide variety of professional development opportunities for students through affiliations with state and national organizations, health education presentations, and patient care outreach committees (e.g. Operation Diabetes, Heartburn Committee, Hypertension Committee, Operation Immunization, Mr. Yuk Poison Awareness, Health Equity Week). 

There is an annual membership fee to join OSSP.  Membership in OSSP provides Pharm.D. students preferred access to OSSP sponsored activities.  In addition, members have access to copies of current pharmacy journals; important updates about pharmacy issues; discounts on books needed for pharmacy school; discounts on NAPLEX review materials; access to funding for local, regional and national meetings held by each organization; and professional development dinners and lectures.   

Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity 

All Pharm.D. students are eligible to join OSU’s chapter of the professional pharmacy fraternity, Phi Delta Chi (PDC).  

Mission 

“The objective of this association shall be to advance the science of Pharmacy and its allied interests, and to foster and promote a fraternal spirit among the Brothers.” From the Phi Delta Chi Constitution.

Membership in Phi Delta Chi is a great way to get involved with the pharmacy community, make new friends, form study groups, gain scholarship opportunities, and have fun! 

Professional Involvement 

PDC is a great way to get involved with the pharmacy community though a variety of activities including “Brown Bag” prescription consultations, Community Health Promotion, and Adopt-A-Family service projects.

Rho Chi Society 

“The Rho Chi Society encourages and recognizes excellence in intellectual achievement and advocates critical inquiry in all aspects of pharmacy. Membership in Rho Chi is based on academic performance in the professional program.  Eligibility is determined in the spring for P2 and P3 students.  National Bylaws restrict membership to no more than the top 20% of student in each professional year.  For questions regarding the organization and membership contact the faculty advisor.

Phi Lambda Sigma 

The purpose of Phi Lambda Sigma, also known as the national Pharmacy Leadership Society, is to promote the development of leadership qualities, especially among pharmacy students. By peer recognition, the Society encourages participation in all pharmacy activities. Since membership crosses fraternal and organizational lines, the Society does not compete with other pharmacy organizations.  

Phi Lambda Sigma honors leadership. Members are selected by peer recognition. No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by one’s peers. Such recognition instills and enhances self-confidence, encourages the less active student to a more active role and promotes greater effort toward the advancement of pharmacy.
